MBL’s Story & Our Exclusive Interview

After years of seeing the potential of SoCal wine making, San Diego sommelier Mark Valin partnered with the Loosen Family in De Luz, California to identify unique sites dotted along the South
Coast. Emphasizing the harmony of attentive farming practices, deliberate varieties and amenable terroir, this new project has plantings at high elevations, along coastal ridges in unique soils. Made by Light was founded on the idea that great wine can be grown in Southern California.

The name is a play on words for our growing area. Situated in the Santa Ana coastal mountains West of Temecula, De Luz has long been an area known for agriculture. It offers multiple unique features. The proximity to the ocean creates a noticeable maritime onshore that keeps the region about 10 degrees cooler than other neighboring wine regions. De Luz is a distinct geological formation falling from the Southern face of the Santa Rosa Plateau. This 2,000-acre nature reserve is home to oaks, seasonal vernal pools and rare wildlife. Rising to 2,500 feet in elevation the plateau is composed of various volcanic soils such as Scoria, Pumice, Granite, Basalt & Gabbro. From the cliff’s edge one can see the San Diego coastline from Oceanside to La Jolla. The De Luz Valley runs off the Santa Ana Mountains into the San Luis Rey River. This naturally cleft draws the maritime influence through the valley, along the Plateau and into the Temecula Valley.

Loosen Family Farms have turned to composting nearly every organic input on the ranch. Cover crops of red clover and alfalfa are used to enrich the soil and retain the water table. Sheep, horses, pigeons, chickens and pigs are used to maintain their extensive composting regimen. In addition to organic grapes, Loosen Farms & Made by Light also have an extensive certified organic avocado grove. There’s no better spot in Southern California to organically farm Rhone and Sicilian varieties.
